Welcome to Jårrh! – a Residency for Choreography and Movement in Swedish Sápmi
Jårrh! is an international residency in Dearna for practitioners who identify as Indigenous people and are active in various art fields and work with choreography and movement as expressions. Baden Hitchcock
Indigenous dancer and choreographer from Australia. He is a descendant from Saibai island, in the Top Western region of the Torres Strait Islands, the Torres Strait treaty village of Mabaduan in Western Province, Papua New Guinea and also from Hanuabada in Central Province. For the past six years Baden has been a pivotal dance member of Bangarra Dance Theatre, Australia’s
leading First nation’s arts company. He now lives and works in Taiwan exploring cross-cultural relation. Starting from June, Baden Hitchcock will be working in Dearna for little over a month. Read interview with Baden – click here!
Tanja Andersson
From Umeå with roots in Sápmi. Lives and works in Gothenburg. Freelance in dance, performance and choreography as well as teaching. In her works, Tanja often works with conditions and methods that follow flows in Sámi culture and nature in contrast to the majority society and urban environment. It has been a way for me to address my Sámi identity in relation to confusion, silence, and in-betweenness. During her residency at Jårrh in July, she will collaborate with composer Ánndaris Rimpi. In the project ”Between marrow and bone”, they want to meet each other, the local population and the local area through improvisation.
About Jårrh!
The residency is aimed at Indigenous artists from various fields who are interested in choreography and movement.
Within the residence, opportunities are offered to work practically or based on ideas in premises that contain a smaller and a larger project room, equipped workshops for woodwork and handicraft and rooms for recovery. The premises can function as public meeting places and spaces for introspective work and are very close to nature in the middle of Dearna. Aejlies functions as a space for artistic and cultural development in an Indigenous context and constitutes a safe meeting place for artists, organizers and audience. Rooted in the local sami community Aejlies contributes on site in Dearna with hosting and together with Riksteatern with an extensive network. Based on an interaction between the arts, the audience and the organizers, the Riksteatern works to strengthen the infrastructure throughout Sweden for organizers and actors in choreography and movement. With cutting-edge knowledge in the field and a national presence, Riksteatern works to enable more people to work in more places.
The residency can be an opportunity to formulate a new project or develop an ongoing work. In order to create an indigenous residency that builds on and conveys trust in the participating practitioners, it is crucial that there are conditions for the residency participants to explore and strengthen their own stories on their own terms. A large part of the residency’s basic requirements is about creating safe spaces – both physical and emotional through the surrounding organization built for Indigenous people by Indigenous people with strong connections to the local community. This creates opportunities for exchanges with other practitioners and the development of existing and new knowledge, experiences and outlooks on life. By inviting people to reconsider and develop concepts, methods and methodologies, an inclusive residency is created where those with experience and knowledge lead the work.
The first residency period is carried out in 2024. The applicant formulates how the time on site in Dearna is used based on wishes and needs. The residency can consist of practical or idea-based work, and the scope and period of the stay during the year can vary depending on the applicant’s project description. The methodology of learning by doing takes place with great respect for the practitioners who will be on site and with consideration for individual conditions.

Jårrh! är ett internationellt residens i Dearna för utövare som identifierar sig som urfolk och är verksamma inom olika konstområden och arbetar med koreografi och rörelse som uttryck. Om Jårrh!
Residenset riktar sig till urfolkskonstnärer från varierande fält som är intresserade av koreografi och rörelse.
Inom residenset erbjuds möjligheter att arbeta praktiskt eller idébaserat i lokaler som inrymmer ett mindre och ett större projektrum, utrustade hård- och mjukslöjdslokaler samt rum för återhämtning. Lokalerna kan fungera som publika mötesplatser och utrymmen för inåtriktat arbete och ligger väldigt naturnära mitt i Dearna. Aejlies fungerar som utrymme för konstnärlig och kulturell utveckling i en urfolkskontext och utgör en trygg mötesplats för konstnärer, arrangörer och publik. Aejlies bidrar på plats i Dearna med värdskap, lokal förankring och tillsammans med Riksteatern med ett omfattande nätverk. Utifrån en växelverkan mellan konsten, publiken och arrangörerna arbetar Riksteatern för att stärka infrastrukturen i hela Sverige för arrangörer och aktörer inom koreografi och rörelse. Med en spetskunskap inom området och en nationell närvaro verkar Riksteatern för att fler ska kunna verka på fler platser.
Residenset kan vara en möjlighet att ostört formulera ett nytt projekt eller utveckla ett pågående arbete. Att det finns förutsättningar för residensdeltagarna att utforska och stärka sina egna historier på sina egna villkor är avgörande för att skapa ett urfolksresidens som bygger på och förmedlar förtroende hos de deltagande utövarna. En stor del av residensets grundförutsättningar handlar om att skapa trygga utrymmen – både fysiska och emotionella genom den omgivande organisationen som byggts upp för urfolk av urfolk med starka kopplingar till det lokala samhället. Detta skapar möjlighet för utbyten med andra utövare och utveckling av befintliga och nya kunskaper, erfarenheter och livsåskådningar. Genom att bjuda in till att ompröva och utveckla begrepp, metoder och arbetssätt skapas ett inkluderande residens där de som äger erfarenheter och kunskaper leder arbetet.
Den första residensperioden genomförs under 2024. Den sökande formulerar hur tiden på plats i Dearna används utifrån önskemål och behov. Residenset kan bestå av praktiskt eller idébaserat arbete och vistelsens omfattning och period under året kan variera beroende på den sökandes projektbeskrivning. Metodiken att lära genom att göra sker med stor respekt för utövarna som kommer att finnas på plats och med hänsyn för individuella förutsättningar.
